Matanzas is a province of Cuba, one of 16 and the second largest, covering about 11,700 square kilometres — 11% of the country. It lies in the northwest. It is made up of five separate pieces of land. It lies wholly within the tropics. It borders Cienfuegos, Mayabeque and Villa Clara.
